Top Jockeys – The Hills Brothers

Michael Hills was born ten minutes before his brother Richard! From the moment the twins were born, they were saturated with horses and racing – their father, Barry Hills is a very successful thoroughbred horse trainer.

Michael Hills

Up to 2006 Hills has a total of 69 winners at Goodwood Racecourse, 30 of them at the five day Festival Meet. He first came good in 1985 when he won the John Kent Handicap on King of Comedy, since then he has won both the premier races at Glorious Goodwood, the Sussex Stakes in 1996 on First Island and the Nassau Stakes in 1997 on Ryafan.

Hills has won well over 115 group winners to date, and there is no indication that he is letting up. Although he was at his most prodigious in the 1990’s, his 2006 season was a marked improvement on the earlier years of the new millennium. He can be grateful to two horses in his career:

Further Flight – the impressive grey stayer who carried him to 9 group race wins, including a record 6 consecutive Jockey Club Gold Cups at Newmarket, a group 3 event
The powerful Shaamit – who lifted the 1996 Epsom Derby with Hills.

Richard Hills

Richard is the principal jockey for the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, and has enjoyed remarkable success in the UAE, where he has won virtually all the thoroughbred horse races in the country. He too has had a successful run at Goodwood over the years and up to 2006 he has matched his brother’s record of 69 overall winners, with 15 of them at the Glorious Goodwood Festival.

He is a genius from the front and although he has been severely criticised of late, he is sure to put in a sterling performance at Goodwood again in 2009.

He savoured his first win at Doncaster in 1979 on Border Dawn, and went on to claim his maiden British Classic when he partnered Harayir to victory in the 1,000 Guineas.
