Top Jockeys – Frankie Dettori

At 38 years old Frankie Dettori is already enshrined in horse racing lore, he is undoubtedly one of the very best jockeys the world has ever seen, and he isn’t done with the sport quite yet!

Dettori enjoys cult status in Britain today and continues to thrill the crowds with his now-famous flamboyant dismounts after winning important races. He currently rides for the UAE based Godolphin team.

Born Lanfranco Dettori in Italy, he soon followed in his famous father’s footsteps – Gianfranco Dettori was a top Italian jockey.

Dettori made waves as early as 1990 when he rode 100 winners in a single season – he became the first teenager, since the celebrated champion jockey, Lester Piggott, to accomplish a century. He now boasts a further century – that of 100 Group 1 winners, the 100th run was scored on Sakhee in the 2001 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe!

He stunned the racing fraternity in September 1996 with his ‘magnificent 7’ wins at Ascot – he rode the winners of every single race on the Ascot racecard, a feat which has never been equalled in recent times! In 2000 he received an honorary MBE.

The only race that continued to elude Dettori was the much coveted Epsom Derby – he finally ditched this duck in 2007 when he triumphed on Authorized!

He is the top jockey at Glorious Goodwood and in 2006 he rode a total of 17 winners. Of his 149 wins at Goodwood, 46 of them were at the Festival Meet.
