Big win for Genki in Steward’s Cup

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Genki emerged as the victory of the last major race at the 2009 Glorious Goodwood meeting on Thursday, taking victory in the 6 furlong Steward’s Cup.

The 14/1 priced 5 year old emerged at the head of the pack in the final furlong of the handicap, and had enough speed to hold off Even And Odds by a length.

Top weighted Knot In Wood arrived home in third place while the antepost favourite, Markab, rewarded his each way backers in fourth place.

“He’s a lovely old horse,” winning jockey, Steve Drowne, told the Press Association after the race. “I was well behind at halfway, but I had the ones on my side covered. When I got to the front on my side the others started to come back to me, he’s picked them off and he’s gone and got them.”

“He’s quite versatile for trip and settles well. He missed the kick the last twice for some reason and today he was sharp out and broke on terms with them and travelled with them. He’s such a game horse. We must have been 10 to 15 lengths behind those on the far side at halfway. He’s done well to pick them up.”

Win for Midday in Nassau Stakes

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Henry Cecil’s Midday walked away with the spoils in the final group one race of the 2009 Glorious Goodwood Festival, landing the Nassau Stakes.

The filly, who had come close to winning both the Epsom and Irish Oaks, came good on her potential by defeating antepost favourite, Rainbow View. Moneycantbuymelove finished the race in third position.

Midday’s win was particularly impressive given that Cecil had been on the verge of withdrawing her from the Nassau Stakes following heavy rain over Goodwood Racecourse on Friday.

“She doesn’t like it soft but I had seen her work well on good to soft and they were going through it,” Cecil said after the race. “The times of the other races weren’t too bad so I took a chance but then thought ‘God, I have done the wrong thing’.”

“I couldn’t watch the race and felt quite sick but I heard everyone shouting ‘come on Midday, come on Midday’ so I knew that we weren’t tailed off.”

Midday’s victory handed winning jockey, Tom Queally, his third group one title of the season.

2009 Steward’s Cup Preview

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

If you’re into lotteries than you’ll love the final feature race of the 2009 Glorious Goodwood meeting – the 6 furlong Steward’s Cup.

Combining the unpredictability of a sprint with a handicap produces a genuine cavalry charge that is set to be contested by no less than 28 runners. Much will depend on which horses get away early, and the jockeys will have their work cut out navigating through the field.

The betting market for the race is headed by Markab at a price of 8/1. This means little as favourites have an exceptionally poor hit rate in handicaps, so we’d recommend taking on some of his backers by laying him at a betting exchange like Betfair.

The rest of the field is priced over 10/1, and it is pretty much anyone’s guess how the race will pan out, with the handicapper having the last say. With this in mind we’re happy to back several runners in the field each-way, with a place by any one of these certain to provide an overall profit.

2009 Nassau Stakes Preview

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

It’s the final day of the 2009 Glorious Goodwood meeting, and organizers have saved the best for last, with racing fans in for a treat with the day’s feature race – the 2009 Nassau Stakes.

The Nassau Stakes has been hit by a slew of late withdrawals, with the likes of Sariska and Lush Lashes opting out of the race. There’s more than enough quality in the field though, with the likes of Rainbow View and Midday still in contention for group one glory in the race.

It’s the former that many punters will be looking to in today’s race. At 4/1 Rainbow view will return stakes on each way bets, and like Rip Van Winkle in the Sussex Stakes, is overdue a group one success this season.

The filly who emerged as a champion in her two year old season will have to contend with Henry Cecil’s Midday, who placed in both the Irish and Epsom Oaks, but has also failed to claim a group one race this season. Midday is the antepost favourite at odds of 7/2.

Aside from the two favourites there are several runners priced around the 7/1 margin who are certainly worth a look for each way bets. Moneycantbuymelove looks particularly compelling coming into the Nassau Stakes on the back of two wins.

Beaten Caracciola heading to Japan

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Caracciola’s connections have decided not to put their 12 year old veteran stayer out to pasture following his disappointing run in yesterday’s Goodwood Cup.

The veteran had been priced among the favourites for the group 2 race over 2 miles, but eventually lost out to a clutch of younger racehorses, led by Saeed bin Suroor’s Schiaparelli.

Despite finishing a country mile behind Schiaparelli, owner Piers Pottinger believes that his racehorse has one more good run left in him, and will send him to Japan to compete in the 2 mile 2 furlong Sports Nippon Sho Stayers Stakes.

“The ground was not ideal but he was staying on very well at the end and we’re still on for the trip to Japan later in the year,” Pottinger was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. “We’re really hoping the Japanese will realise he’s a bit of a star and make a fuss of him.”

However, the former national hunt racehorse won’t required to go back to the office just yet. He’ll be returning to the national hunt format first, and will also benefit from having regular trainer, Nicky Henderson, at his side when the trainer returns from a ban.

“He will now go off to Fiona Marner at Kingwood Stud for a good rest,” Pottinger concluded. “Then we might bring him back for the Cheltenham meeting in November for a prep-run for hurdles. He is always best fresh for jumping.”

Fortune smiles on Rainbow View

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Jockey Jimmy Fortune is confident that he can land his second Glorious Goodwood feature race onboard Rainbow View in tomorrow’s group one Nassau Stakes.

Fortune, who expertly guided Laa Rayb to victory for Mark Johnston in the totesport Mile, will be leading Rainbow View into battle against a top quality field that includes a clutch of 4 year old group one winners and this season’s top performing filly – Sariska.

The jockey is hopeful that Rainbow View will overcome an indifferent season that has seen her struggle to fulfill the potential she showed as the 2 year old champion filly in 2008.

“She’s run a good race every time she’s run this season and has done nothing wrong,” Fortune told the Press Association. “She just hasn’t had her ground. The rain we had on Thursday will hopefully help but if we have a drying day then it’s back to good again. It’s just a pity the Nassau wasn’t on Thursday.”

“I think a mile and a quarter should be right for her and obviously I’d be hoping it’s going to rain. I think there are showers forecast so let’s hope they fall on the track as that would certainly help her cause.”

“It’s a competitive race, as you’d expect for a Group One, but I certainly haven’t lost faith in her. She’s working well, we’re very happy with her and I’m certain that when she gets proper soft ground she’ll come back to her best. She’s definitely up to winning a Group One and I wouldn’t swap her for anything else in the race.”

Johnston scores with Laa Rayb in totesport Mile

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Mark Johnston’s form at the 2009 Glorious Goodwood Festival continued on Friday, as the trainer landed the totesport Mile with 25-1 longshot Laa Rayb.

The gelding overcame a period of indifferent form to win the totesport Mile, excelling despite a poor draw to finish the day four feature race 2 lengths ahead of 9/1 priced Spectait. Another long shot, 22-1 priced Docofthebay, finished the race in third place.

“The winner is of Group Two caliber,” Johnston was quoted as saying by the Press Association. “We gave him a nice break coming here, and that seems to have made the difference - along with the blinkers. He’s perhaps not looked in love with the game in the past, but producing him right on the day is the key.”

“You can’t give up on horses with that much class. He’s obviously got his quirks and a lot of miles on the clock. He’s probably benefited from a bit of a gap between his races as well.”

The 2009 totesport Mile left bookmakers laughing all the way to the bank, with antepost favourites Cloudy Start, Acrostic and Extraterrestrial finishing the race well out of range of a place.

Group 3 wins for Stoute and Cecil on day 3

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Sir Michael Stoute’s rich run of form continued at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday, as he landed the group 3 Audi Stakes with Kingsgate Native.

The colt was hauled out of stud to compete in the race, and put in a bullocking run to leave Total Gallery in his wake. Inxile finished the race in third place.

“He’s quickened up really well and has put the race to bed very quickly. I think he’s always been quite a highly-strung horse,” Stoute told Sky Sports News after the race.

“He’s been covering mares so they’ve done a really good job to get him back and win a Group race. He gave me a real good feel and couldn’t have been more impressive.”

Day three of the Glorious Goodwood Meeting also produced a group 3 victory for Henry Cecil, who watched Sevenna take victory in the 1 mile 6 furlong Moet Hennessy Fillies’ Stakes.

“She really tried and loves that ground,” winning jockey Tom Queally said after the race. “Our horses are only just beginning to come to themselves and she’s no exception. Her guts and determination showed where it mattered.”

2009 totesport Mile Preview

Friday, July 31st, 2009

It’s day four of the Glorious Goodwood Festival, and today’s feature race comes in the form of a 1 mile handicap, the 2009 totesport Mile.

Betting on a handicap is never easy, and the totesport Mile will be no exception as it has drawn a large field featuring several entries more than capable of storming to victory in the race. However, handicaps are also renowned for value, and there are great odds to be had in the totesport Mile betting markets.

Henry Cecil’s Cloudy Start has emerged as the favourite in the totesport Mile betting markets over the past week. He’s placed in each of his last four races, taking two wins in the process, and is a great value bet at 7/1.

Cloudy Start is shadowed by Extraterrestrial at 7/1, who boasts a less than stellar record over recent races, but has nevertheless attracted strong backing from punters. Luca Cumani’s Acrostic has also been trading around the 7/1 mark.

If you’re betting on this race, you’re pretty much left looking to markets for guidance. Punters have been spot on in the last three feature races at Goodwood, which suggests it may be an idea to bet each way on all three entries priced around 7/1 in the totesport Mile betting markets.

Schiaparelli wins Goodwood Cup

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Well backed favourite, Schiaparelli, claimed feature race honours at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday, holding off a late surge by Mourilyan to win the 2 mile group 2 Goodwood Cup.

Frankie Dettori pushed his charge into the lead with 4 furlongs to go, and then kept him ahead of Mourilyan to win the race. 33/1 priced outsider, the Betchworth Kid, finished the race in third place.

The win was Dettori’s 50th at the Glorious Goodwood meeting, and put the Italian jockey on two wins for the 2009 meeting.

“This fellow is a good horse,” Dettori told the Racing Post after the race. “It’s his first try over this trip and he stayed well and he won like a nice stayer.”

“I had a little look and I saw Ryan (Moore) behind me, but my horse wasn’t slowing down so I thought he’d be very hard to get past. He’s very versatile as he stays well and a mile and a half in soft ground is fine for him. He can do both.”
