Win for Midday in Nassau Stakes

Henry Cecil’s Midday walked away with the spoils in the final group one race of the 2009 Glorious Goodwood Festival, landing the Nassau Stakes.

The filly, who had come close to winning both the Epsom and Irish Oaks, came good on her potential by defeating antepost favourite, Rainbow View. Moneycantbuymelove finished the race in third position.

Midday’s win was particularly impressive given that Cecil had been on the verge of withdrawing her from the Nassau Stakes following heavy rain over Goodwood Racecourse on Friday.

“She doesn’t like it soft but I had seen her work well on good to soft and they were going through it,” Cecil said after the race. “The times of the other races weren’t too bad so I took a chance but then thought ‘God, I have done the wrong thing’.”

“I couldn’t watch the race and felt quite sick but I heard everyone shouting ‘come on Midday, come on Midday’ so I knew that we weren’t tailed off.”

Midday’s victory handed winning jockey, Tom Queally, his third group one title of the season.
