Big win for Genki in Steward’s Cup
Genki emerged as the victory of the last major race at the 2009 Glorious Goodwood meeting on Thursday, taking victory in the 6 furlong Steward’s Cup.
The 14/1 priced 5 year old emerged at the head of the pack in the final furlong of the handicap, and had enough speed to hold off Even And Odds by a length.
Top weighted Knot In Wood arrived home in third place while the antepost favourite, Markab, rewarded his each way backers in fourth place.
“He’s a lovely old horse,” winning jockey, Steve Drowne, told the Press Association after the race. “I was well behind at halfway, but I had the ones on my side covered. When I got to the front on my side the others started to come back to me, he’s picked them off and he’s gone and got them.”
“He’s quite versatile for trip and settles well. He missed the kick the last twice for some reason and today he was sharp out and broke on terms with them and travelled with them. He’s such a game horse. We must have been 10 to 15 lengths behind those on the far side at halfway. He’s done well to pick them up.”
